BDE stands for Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone — three isolated offshore reefs rising from the deep blue of Egypt's southern Red Sea, and together they form the most requested liveaboard itinerary in the country. There are no day boats out here. These sites sit far from shore in open water, which is exactly why the walls are draped in soft coral, the schools are thick, and the sharks show up.

The Brothers Islands (El Akhawein)
Two small islands roughly 67 km off El Quseir, encircled by vertical walls that drop into open ocean.
- Big Brother — the larger island, crowned by a 19th-century stone lighthouse, with steep coral walls and the strongest currents of the trip.
- Little Brother — a single reef the size of a football pitch, famous for cathedral-like gorgonian fan gardens and passing thresher and hammerhead sharks.
- Numidia Wreck — a British cargo steamer that struck Big Brother's northern tip in 1901 and now cascades down the wall from around 10 m to beyond recreational limits, completely encrusted in coral.
- Aida Wreck — an Egyptian supply vessel lost in 1957, resting upright on Big Brother's western slope between roughly 30 m and 65 m — a moody, deep dive best suited to experienced divers.
Daedalus Reef (Abu Kizan)
The most remote stop on the route, a circular reef and lighthouse standing alone some 90 km offshore. The northern plateau is one of the Red Sea's best-known spots for schooling scalloped hammerheads in summer, while the southern side offers anemone gardens and huge hard coral formations. Elphinstone Reef
Closer to shore off Marsa Alam, this long, narrow reef with north and south plateaus is the Red Sea's signature oceanic whitetip site, particularly in late autumn. Details in the Elphinstone Reef guide.
Who Is the BDE Route For?
Currents here are strong, entries are usually negative, and there's rarely a mooring line to hold. Most operators ask for an Advanced certification and 50+ logged dives, and Nitrox plus a surface marker buoy are close to essential. Marine Park permits apply, and access to the offshore reefs can be restricted at certain times of year — always confirm with your operator before booking.
Best Time to Dive BDE
Boats typically run the route from March to December. Late spring and autumn offer the best all-round conditions; June–August brings the strongest hammerhead action at Daedalus; October–December is peak oceanic whitetip season at Elphinstone. Winter crossings are possible but the open-water transits get rough.
