Marsa Alam is the gateway to the southern Red Sea's finest diving, and a liveaboard is the best way to experience it. Sailing from nearby Port Ghalib, these safaris reach world-class sites that day boats simply can't — the sheer walls of Elphinstone, the offshore plateaus of Daedalus and the Brothers, and the remote reefs of Fury Shoals and St John's toward the Sudanese border. On board you sleep steps from the dive deck and can log up to four dives a day, including night dives, while the boat repositions between reefs overnight. Browse the Marsa Alam liveaboard safaris below, or tell us your experience level and dates and we'll match you to the right boat and route.
Where a Marsa Alam liveaboard takes you
Most safaris follow one of a few classic southern routes. The right one depends on how far you want to sail, the conditions you're comfortable with, and whether you're chasing big fish or coral gardens.
Elphinstone
A short hop from Marsa Alam to one of Egypt's most famous reefs, with sheer walls, soft-coral-draped drop-offs and reliable shark sightings — including oceanic whitetips through the autumn months.
Daedalus & the Brothers
Offshore marine-park reefs built for big-fish action: schooling hammerheads in summer, threshers, grey reef sharks and vast gorgonian fans on current-swept plateaus. Typically advanced itineraries.
Fury Shoals & St John's (the Deep South)
The far-south reefs — remote, uncrowded and famous for pristine hard-coral gardens, easy caverns and photogenic swim-throughs, plus Sataya's resident spinner dolphins. A varied mix that suits a wide range of levels.
Rocky Island & Zabargad
The southernmost tip of Egypt's Red Sea: dramatic walls, dense soft corals and strong pelagic chances. Remote and current-swept, best kept for experienced divers.
Good to know before you book
When to go
You can dive Marsa Alam year-round, but March to June and September to November are prime for calm seas and visibility. Hammerhead chances peak in summer at Daedalus and the Brothers, while oceanic whitetips are most likely around October to December at Elphinstone. Water runs roughly 22°C in winter to 30°C in summer.
Experience level
Many southern sites involve currents, drop-offs and depth. Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) and some logged dives are recommended for offshore routes, though the gentler Fury Shoals reefs also suit less-experienced divers. Check each safari's requirements before booking.
Departure and getting there
Safaris depart from Port Ghalib marina, about 15–20 minutes from Marsa Alam International Airport. Arrive at least a day before departure to allow for any travel delays, and plan a buffer on the return.
